Low Luster vs. Medium Luster Hair
by Gloria Kelley
The luster of hair refers to the “sheen” of hair or how light reflects from the hair, which gives the strands its glossy or shiny look. High luster hair will typically feel silky and look very shiny. Most people with fine or silky natural hair strands will opt for the high luster hair because of its high sheen and silky texture. Most Indian, Chinese, and European hair are high in luster.

Medium luster hair is not too shiny but has a natural or average amount of sheen to reflect the natural look of most women hair. Medium luster hair is the most popular amongst my clients because it matches effortlessly with natural-curly hair once pressed, or those with relaxed hair. It is also low maintenance when it comes to styling and everyday wear.

Low luster hair has the lowest amount of sheen, it will look and feel coarse. Low luster hair is rare, but it also blends the best with the 4b and 4c hair type which is kinky and coarse.
Filipino hair and Russian Fede hair come in medium luster and low luster. Filipino and Russian hair tend to be more expensive than Indian and Chinese hair because of its rarity. The hair strands are also thicker in diameter per strand; therefore the hair looks fuller.
